Improving health aid effectiveness is vital, so why aren’t donors making the most of the money available?

We know what we’re up against when it comes to shrinking aid budgets, but making the most of the money available is certainly not straightforward. The Action for Global Health report on health aid effectiveness, published on World Health Day, identifies three central problems which mean money is not being used as effectively as it could be: poor coordination, exclusion of civil society and the misinterpretation of managing for results as “financing by results”.

Nobody needs to be told twice that we’re supposed to be on the “final stretch” to realising our MDG targets, most of which are already falling well behind the clock. Already in 2001, it was internationally acknowledged that developing countries’ investments in health need additional support from the international community if the poorest populations around the world were to see their health needs and rights fulfilled. Progress has been made so far by both developing countries and donors, and we cannot afford to slow down now; the consequences would be irreversible.
